With this year-end column we begin a new tradition - The G-Spot Gadget of the Year.

There's no monetary prize for the inventor. No regal ceremony in some snow-laden Scandinavian country. I simply take a look back at this year's columns and pick the gadget I think was the best of the lot.

This was a big year for The Gadget Guy family. We got two new dogs in 2008. The corgi pup lying on my living room rug is Chip. He's extremely loving, constantly runs to our front door to bark at nothing and has a running feud with a parked Jeep across the street.

The other pooch is Wrex The Dawg. Robots were big in the gadget world this year, and Wrex, a personable and very mechanical version of a junkyard dog, wins 2008's Gadget of the Year honor.

Wrex (originally priced by Wowwee at $150; currently available for $50 at Amazon.com) does everything you'd expect of a real dog: He plays, begs, swivels his ears, turns his head and even cocks his leg while making peeing sounds.

Since he's a cartoon-like robot, he'll also act like a cat when you smack his "bump button nose," and he can rotate his eyes like a slot machine. His moods include happy, crazy or "junkyard dog" angry.

Chip performs no tricks, though he loves to fetch. Wrex performs any of 80 movements or tricks as directed via remote control. He can also roam freely, avoiding obstacles and reacting to things around him.

Wrex faced tough competition for the title of Gadget of the Year (all of which you can re-read in the archives at ColumbusAlive.com).

He beat out Heartland America's Lover's Cushion, which promises no less than the best sex ever; GPS lingerie from Brazil; the 195-mph Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder I test-drove; the Clear card that legally lets you line-jump at airport security checkpoints (not including Port Columbus); the DTV converter box you better attach to your analog TV by Feb. 17; and the Toto Washlet Toilet with its heated seat and the mechanics to wash and dry your sorry butt.

But in the end, thanks to Wrex, 2008 proved to be the year of the robot dog.

PROTEUS

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; People were often carried in Kago to distant places. The Kago was a basket suspended from a wooden pole, called here the Shoulder Pole, as shown in the photo. It was carried by two men, one in front and the other behind.
Travel in olden times was far from smooth. There were mountains, steep slopes, and sharply winding roads to traverse. The bearers who carried the Kago had to cooperate very closely to reduce the sway and complete the journey safely.

i hope Indonesia can give the best performance and bring the medal to indonesia

ATmega8 circuit

huy, i have a circuit which use atmega8 micro controller, it's simple for you to make a circuit with proteus program and program with ldmicro, and then compile your program using ponyprog serial data software. its very cheap, and very easy to use. good luck

DOHC

Once, a method of engine design. Today, a triumph of marketing.

Auto manufacturers (primarily the japanesse) appear to have convinced many people that DOHC (Dual OverHead Cam) engines are new, high-tech, and cool. In fact, many European manufacturers have used them for decades. I personally owned a 1974 Fiat (not exacly a luxury or exotic car) with a DOHC engine, and there was nothing esoteric about it.

There also seems to be a notion about that DOHC implies > 2 valves/cylinder. Again, nothing could be farther from the truth. The advantage of a DOHC engine is not the number of valves you can drive, but their placement. Even in a "conventional", 2-valve-per-cylinder engine, a DOHC design allows the valves to be placed in such a way that the flow of the gas-air mixture through the combustion chamber can be optimized.

The other advantages of a DOHC design are

less friction than an OHV(p) design,

fewer moving parts than a pushrod design, and

the ability (in some engines) to have different valve timing on the intake and exhaust valves.

It should be noted that there are really two "flavors" of DOHC design; in a four cylinder, 8-valve engine, typically one drives the intake valves and the other drives the exhaust valves. This scheme can be extended to 16-valve, 4-cylinder designs trivially. In a V-6, -8, or -12 engine with two banks of cylinders, each camshaft will generally drive all the valves in one bank of cylinders. This type of design might more properly be called a "double-SOHC" design, but in practice this distinction is very seldom made.

drum brakes

Cars are often equipped with drum brakes in the rear and disc brake in the front for cost reasons. Drum brakes are cheaper for the manufacturer to install.

Drum brakes work on the same principle as disc brakes. Shoes push against a moving surface and the friction lowers the rational speed of the wheel. The basic construction of a drum brake is a cylinder (the drum) which contains two brake shoes and a piston. The drum rotates on the same axis as the wheel. The shoes face the inside of the cylinder and the piston sits between them. There are also a number of springs in place to pull the shoes back away from the drum when the brakes aren't active and some levers for the emergency brakes.

When the brake pedal is pushed, brake fluid from the master cylinder enters the piston and forces the shoes apart, pushing them against the drum. The emergency brakes system is much easier to implement in cars with drum brakes. The power for the braking comes from a cable which, when pulled tight, forces the brake shoes apart. This is important, since emergency brakes must operate even if the hydraulic system isn't functional.

The brakes are located on the inside of the wheels (where the tire is attached), and are attached to the hub. The brakes have many parts inside, the most obvious of which are the shoes. They are semicircular bits of metal with pads on the outside. At one end, they will be connected by the piston, and at the other by the adjuster mechanism.

Drum brakes lose effectiveness in sustained braking because they quickly overheat. Disc brakes run much cooler comparatively, and will be much more effective at slowing you while going down hills. The danger of overheating means that drum brakes must have less braking power than a disc brake. Disc brake can put a lot more hydraulic force into stopping the car without damaging the brakes or fading.

Because friction is involved in this braking system, there will be wear. It is important to keep the gap between the drum and the shoes constant, so that there is no noticeable change in the action of the brake pedal. Modern drum brakes have a self-adjusting mechanism that automatically moves the shoes closer to the drum as they wear. As shoes wear out, a small metal bit touches the drum, making a squeaking noise while braking lightly. This is an indication that the shoes will need to be changed soon.

If the brake shoes are replaced at the proper time (before they are completely worn away), they should be the only thing that will need servicing. Generally, it is a good idea to replace the shoes when there is between 1/32" and 1/16" of material left. If the shoes are allowed to remain in poor shape for too long, rivets in the shoe may gouge the inside of the drum, producing unpleasant noises, and less effective brakes. Contamination due to oil or other fluids or erosion due to burning are also factors in brake wear. Sudden, heavy braking greatly increases wear and can burn the surface of the shoes or the inside of the drum.

Fun With Piezoelectric Film

Piezo-electricity, directly translated means pressure electricity. The root word Piezo is derived from the Greek word piezein, meaning to press tight or squeeze. The balance of the term, is electricity. Put the two together and we arrive at squeezed electricity. So, if content follows form then piezoelectric materials when squeezed generate electricity. And that's true.
In this article we will experiment with a unique piezoelectric material, piezoelectric film.
The piezoelectric effect was discovered by Pierre and Jacques Curie.
